CLIVE OWEN has a new big hit on the small screen in the blood-splattered medical drama The Knick. He talks to ELLE KWAN about the Owen smoulder and why he couldn’t care less about being called a Hollywood heartthrob. FOR AN A-LIST celebrity Clive Owen plays it pretty quiet, so it’s not altogether surprising to find him, tucked away from the cameras and stylists, in the bedroom of a hushed, plush suite at the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong.

Australian truffles to rival the French

Until recently, truffles were a limited winter speciality. With the advent of the Aussie version, gourmets are treated to a second flush from June to September. Australians began transplanting trees inoculated with truffle spores from France almost two decades ago, and Hongkongers are starting to reap the benefits.

FOR A MOMENT, as writer Jung Chang floats into Hong Kong’s exhibition centre during this year’s book fair in July, sound drains from the room. Movement stops. Even static, it seems, is not permitted to buzz. In a full-length silk tunic painted in soft aqua blues and greens, with nude stacked heels and a long mane of black hair piled high at the front, Chang, 61, is an arresting presence – somehow serene, yet powerful.

Hats Off: Asia's Top Milliners Celebrity milliner Jaycow trained at the London College of Fashion and under royal hatter Rose Cory before returning to her hometown, Hong Kong. Here, the stylist-turned-hatmaker made her name adorning the heads of Cantopop superstars Karen Mok and Eason Chan with her flamboyant designs: think sculptural gothic headpieces shooting with stark black feathers.

Actress and singer Karen Mok celebrates 20 years at the top this year and recently staged an exhibition at LANDMARK Atrium, which gave fans an exclusive look "backstage". It's been two decades since acclaimed singer and actress Karen Mok burst into the spotlight. Since then, the star has garnered critical praise and shocked and dazzled fans with boundary-pushing performances and promotions.

A stalwart of Art Basel is the Art Bar installation sponsored by Swedish vodka brand Absolut. ELLE KWAN discovers what’s in store for drinkers at the fair’s Hong Kong debut this month. IN THESE HEDONISTIC days it takes something to stand out in the bar world. We’ve huddled under furs in bars where temperatures are kept well below freezing, we’ve ascended to bars several hundred metres high above cities, and we’ve visited bars where drinks are consumed in pitch darkness.

Getting kids to eat healthy food by stealth

The key is looking beyond just sandwiches, says Tracy Griffith, author of a new book called Stealth Health Lunches Kids Love , to be released here next month. Griffith, who counts a sushi mat as a lunchtime essential, has declared war on the usual suspects, from packaged crisps to sugar-loaded snacks.

Pony Rides, Pirates, And Teepees

Ocean Park and Disneyland are undeniably big-ticket trips in Hong Kong, but there's plenty more to pack into your schedule. Mickey is merely the beginning... Transport-loving kids from tots to teens will love the myriad ways to see Hong Kong's famous skyline. The short cable car ride to Victoria Peak turns skyscrapers on their sides as it makes its steep climb to the top.

Driven Wild

ELLE KWAN discovers Björn Frantzén’s award-winning New Nordic cuisine. CHEF BJÖRN FRANTZÉN’S list of dishes reads like the fantastical imaginations of a Roald Dahl Character – a Willy Wonka about to go wild with invention in his chocolate factory. One description: oyster “45min”, with Jersey cream, perfumed juniper berries, dried seaweed, frozen sea buckthorn and walnuts.

Since moving to Hong Kong 8 years ago, i've covered everything from secret drinking spots to profiles of Hong Kong's big political leaders. I write predominantly profiles and feature stories related to lifestyle; food, celebrity, travel, fashion, design and kids.

My interviews are diverse and include international names like fashion designer Diane Von Furstenburg, London architect Thomas Heatherwick, and author Jung Chang. In Asia, profiles have included awarded music personalities like Karen Mok and G.E.M to Hong Kong Chief Executive C.Y. Leung.

I have written extensively on the food scene across the Asia Pacific, from fine dining to the local organic movement, and have a strong stable of contacts in this area.

During time as a staffer on several Hong Kong-based magazines, and then during the last four years freelancing i've built up a solid network. I'm known for delivering quality stories always on deadline.
